Magic, Mists & Mellow Fruitfulness – Guided Walk

We begin in St Mary’s Church, Bungay. We will focus on the profound changes that occurred during the Reformation period, and in particular the destruction of the ancient and revered images of saints, angels, and the Holy Family which decorated church interiors.

Many parishioners believed that such imagery provided a protective magic, and when it was destroyed it left them vulnerable to the evil workings of Satan, and other dangers. So increasingly they turned to the support of Wise Men and White Witches in the community who could assist them with spells and herbal potions as new forms of protection.

We will also explore the churchyard looking at trees, particularly the venerated Yew, plants, flowers, and berries which flourish in the autumn period and provided various protections and cures.

We then continue a short distance to Staithe riverside where we will consider the significance of water worship in past times.

The Tour is led by Bungay resident, author and historian Christopher Reeve and will run from 11 – 1pm. Meet at St Mary’s Church, Bungay. Older children are welcome accompanied by an adult .
