Beachcombing Walk at Covehithe

Saturday 29th July. 12 mid-day – 3pm.

Covehithe beachThe seaside is more than a place for sunbathing, swimming and generally relaxing – it can also be a gateway into discovery and creativity! This walk is along the coast at Covehithe with Simon Raven, inveterate beachcomber and creative bodger. Join Simon  for an informed ramble along his  favourite bit of wild but constantly changing Suffolk coast. Continuous erosion means that every visit has the possibility of something new to discover.

Simon proposes a round walk along the cliff-top towards Benacre Broad and then returning via the beach as far as Covehithe and the footpath back to St Andrew’s Church. There is much to talk about and discover, whether you are – or feel you are – 7 or 70. We’ll use quadrats to get our eye in for seeing hidden treasures, examine the tide-line for sea-born detritus which could be turned into something transformative, look for evidence of Doggerland and the prehistoric world.

The walk itself is only about 2½ miles long and is suitable for adults (as long as they are firm footed), children (but not toddlers) and well behaved dogs. Bring a packed lunch which we’ll eat on the beach and a small bag for ‘finds’ if we strike lucky! There are no toilets on this walk but there are plenty of quiet places if needed.

Directions from Wrentham on the A12: If coming from the south turn right at the cross-roads in the centre of the village and then immediately left on to Mill Lane. If coming from the north turn left at the cross-roads. Follow Mill Lane for 1 mile and park your cars on the roadside verges (you’ll see where others are parked, both on Mill Lane and round the corner). Meet at mid-day in the churchyard of St. Andrews (NR34 7JJ). We’ll be walking at a leisurely pace so allow about 3 hours for the complete experience.

Cost: £8 per adult (over 18) / £6 for Waveney and Blyth Arts members / Under 18s free.
