Popular day workshops exploring a range of music written for women’s voices, and looking at ways in which we can increase our singing confidence and make a fantastic sound together. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced singer, or anything in between, these harmony filled workshops are accessible, uplifting and fun.
As well as learning great songs, each workshop will look at how your voice works and how to get the most from it, and give you the opportunity to experiment with your range.

A 6-week course designed to start your week with accessible, uplifting and inspiring music from a whole range of great singing traditions.
Open to all. No previous experience is necessary and everything is taught by ear.

Harmony Singing Skills and Songs with Sian Croose
Tuesdays 19:30 – 21:30. 12, 19, 26 September, 3, 10, 17 24 October

An 8-week course in which you’ll learn to sing in harmony, find out how it works and build your confidence when singing in parts. Open to anyone who would like to sing, with or without previous singing experience.
We will be singing inspiring songs from a range of sources, traditional and contemporary, including newly written songs from the UK and the US, songs from the African American tradition, work and sacred songs from the Republic of Georgia, and folk songs from Corsica, Bulgaria and Finland.

Reading Music from Scratch for Singers with Jon Baker
Wednesdays 19:30 -21:30. 20, 27 September, 4, 11 October

If you feel baffled when looking at music notation, this 4-week course is for you. We will take you through how to make sense of basic aspects of written music: the musical stave, note values, rhythms, intervals and elementary harmony and how to relate all of these to the singing voice. No experience is needed, just an enthusiasm to find out more. There will be lots of practical examples and practice routines to help with this.

Jazz, Soul and R&B Singing with Jon Baker
Wednesdays 19:30 – 21:30. 18, 25 October, 1, 8 November
Friends Meeting House, Upper Goat Lane, Norwich
A 4-week course open to anybody who wants to sing in these popular, rhythmic styles which broadly incorporate gospel, jazz, blues, soul and R&B. We will be learning the basics of improving our singing with rhythm, syncopation and swing. Through group exercises and practice recommendations, we will be developing the skills needed to express ourselves in these genres as well as looking at a number of well-known tunes from across the last hundred years of music, as well as ‘choral jazz’ and some tips on simple improvising.
Sound files of backing tracks will be made available for practice between sessions. No previous singing experience is necessary. Suitable for beginners and those who have done this course previously.

Men’s Voices with Jon Baker
Wednesdays 19:30 – 21:30. 15, 22, 29 November, 6,13, 20 December
Friends Meeting House, Upper Goat Lane, Norwich
This 6-week course will offer the opportunity to learn about the male voice and to explore many different styles of music from all over the world, singing in unison and simple harmonies. We will work on breathing and use exercises which help to develop range, tone, breathing and confidence.
This course is suitable for anyone new to singing, those who haven’t sung for a long time and singers with more experience. All the music will be taught by ear from scratch. We will work together towards an informal short performance before Christmas.
