As part of a series of improvements to public spaces in Halesworth, the Town Council wishes to brighten the town centre by having new, colourful designs painted on the bollards throughout the Thoroughfare and the Market Place. An artist/project leader is required to create a cohesive design scheme and manage its implementation as a community project, using volunteer resources where possible.
Nine years ago, a number of the bollards in the semi-pedestrianised Thoroughfare were painted with vivid designs, some of which represented nearby businesses. The painted bollards were popular with residents, businesses and visitors. They contributed to pedestrians’ safety by making delivery drivers more aware of their way through the centre of the Thoroughfare. Over time, the original painted designs have deteriorated. The project covers the creation of new designs for all of the bollards in the Thoroughfare and the Market Place, including those which are currently undecorated. A certain amount of preliminary maintenance is required, and this will be carried out by a contractor prior to the start of the project. In total, there are 43 bollards to be decorated.
The new designs should be eye-catching, and should preserve the quirky character of the current range of painted bollards. The designs should be linked together in a cohesive scheme which reinforces the continuity of the streetscape. The materials used must be weather-proof.
This will be a community project, in which the project leader will co-ordinate the participation of volunteers and other members of the community. The project will be overseen by the Halesworth Town Council, working with local groups and businesses.
To undertake this project, you should either have, or should be able to call upon, both the creative skills to come up with designs, and the organisational ability to manage a community project dependent on a number of volunteers. Fees for the work will be in the region of £30 per bollard. In order to register your interest, please contact the Halesworth Town Clerk at clerk@halesworthtowncouncil.org.uk, no later than Friday 29th September. It is envisaged that the artist/project leader will be appointed by November 30th , and that the work of the project will be completed by the end of April 2024.
