Ballroom Arts
Four women art dealers have decided to bring a niche art fair to Aldeburgh this June to celebrate the artists of East Anglia past and present, alongside other Modern British artists of note.
A chance meeting at the Saatchi Galleries between Tom Brent, the designer of the new Ballroom Arts complex in Aldeburgh – a stunning converted building on Aldeburgh High Street – and one of the exhibitors gave life to the idea and the collaboration quickly grew.
Stepping away from the huge art fairs in London, established art dealers Anna Wakerley, Emma Judd, Belinda Allen Agar and Sally Patrick, each with strong links to the area are keen to showcase the strength and depth of native East Anglian painters, printmakers and sculptors, by exhibiting a wide variety of works in various genres.
The event coincides with the Aldeburgh Festival, the English arts festival held at Snape Maltings which is devoted to classical music and founded in 1948 by the composer Benjamin Britton (an avid collector of Modern British art himself) and the singer Peter Pears.
The art fair will feature works by artists associated with the heyday of the Benton End School in Suffolk, with the Great Bardfield group of artists in Essex and with Colchester School of Art, right up to the
current day.
The exhibitors will also be flying the flag for a selection of women artists from the area who are now receiving well deserved recognition. You can look forward to seeing names like Maggi Hambling, Margaret Mellis, Mary Fedden, Prunella Clough and Wilhelmina Barns Graham alongside John Nash, Keith Vaughan, Edward Bawden and Terry Frost. Contemporary works and sculpture will also be on show.
All artworks will be for sale with prices ranging from about £250 to £7000.
The Aldeburgh Art Fair will open at 2pm – 7pm on Thursday 22nd June
Thereafter, opening times will be 10.30am – 5pm Fri 23rd to Tues 27th June https://ballroomarts.org

Hilary and Rob Garner are launching a new gallery and event space where they live in Holton, near Halesworth.
Holton Lodge Barn is a beautifully restored property consisting of a threshing barn and stables together with Hilary’s art studio. A shepherd’s hut in the front courtyard contains a small kitchen and bathroom. There is ample parking at the front and a lovely patio garden at the rear.
Hilary and Rob are working hard to organise the Gallery Launch Exhibition, which will run from Saturday 24 June to Saturday 22 July. This promises to be very exciting with work selected from twenty contemporary artists from across East Anglia.
During the exhibition, the gallery will be open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays 10.30am to 4pm, and other days by appointment. The Private View will be on Friday 30 June 5pm to 8pm.
As well as curating their own exhibitions, they are making the gallery available for hire for other people’s art exhibitions and events, either as separate units or as one space.

The Cut
‘Murmurs from the Wide River’ brings together works by the painter Freya Purdue that have been developed over the last few years. The title refers to a quiet calling that may be hard to hear at first, but which becomes insistent over prolonged duration, summoning us to address and acknowledge it. This signifies the idea or call of the inner life of humanity that runs like a vein of gold through us, linking us as human beings since time immemorial.
These paintings are visual explorations of soul traces and connections drawn from experiences of both inner and outer life. They are inspired by years of research into spiritual and visual cultures that link with the arts of making, painting, and ritual celebration. The subjects draw on a wide range of sources, from classical themes and histories in painting, to the subtleties of scientific, anthropological, philosophical, and mystical thought. Through the magical process of painting, these streams of research, and the painter’s experience and energy are interwoven to express each work’s distinct voice within the wider river’s flow.
“I approach each painting as a new journey, a new kind of sensitivity and living energy to be explored and realised. Each painting is nurtured over time to evolve a resolution that communicates this energy both through drawing and colour.”
“To me the practice of painting is both visionary and solitary and is traditional in this sense. Working alone in the studio is a way of opening the mind to the infinite space of the imagination. It becomes a sacred space within which original ideas can flow and be woven into new visual poetic realities”.
A painting’s colour and form are what carries it’s impact to the heart of the viewer. It sings the song embedded in the painting and opens the door to experiencing the life and soul of the work.
