IBBAS

1st January 2020 By Nicky Stainton

IBBAS logo

A principal aim of IBBAS is to raise awareness of Harry Becker’s work, a fine artist who lived and worked here in the Blyth Valley in the early years of the 20th century.

The society runs an exhibition each year in August, which, since 2019, has been in held the “Cathedral of the Marshes”: Holy Trinity Church, Blythburgh, Suffolk. The exhibition showcases over 100 contemporary artworks from East Anglian artists who find inspiration in Becker’s approach to his work. Each year new artists are added to our numbers, keeping the collection vibrant and exciting. Its a show with celebration at its heart, and Holy Trinity provides an additional layer of excitement to the Society’s goals, because it is where the Becker familia’s are buried; the favourite and much loved church of Becker’s daughter, and home to the tenor bell funded by Becker’s widow and daughter. We really feel at home in this light-filled, ancient space.

The ‘Paint-Out’ Competition which has become a regular part of the exhibition, grows in popularity each year, attracting artists whose speciality is painting ‘en plein air’. They certainly have a very beautiful landscape and building to use as their subject matter, and their work is places on display in the main exhibition.

We have recently incorporated an art workshop within the show, run by our Chair, the professional artist Annie Brundrit.

Throughout the year we run a programme of sketching groups at different sites across the county.
Please visit www.ibbas.co.uk for details of the exhibition, and of our other activities, and use our contact form on the Membership page for further details.

Mike Challis is a freelance sound artist, maker and educator.

His SoundHides for Waveney Sculpture Trail 2015 and SPILL 2016 created a den in a straw hut playing recordings of sounds of nature from local habitats. He is working on a new SoundHide for Suffolk Wildlife Trust using recordings made at their Carlton Marshes Nature Reserve. This SoundHide will feature in the FirstLight Festival in Lowestoft in June.

His aeolian sculptures, Beech Cello and Microtonal Chimes, were exhibited at the Waveney Valley Sculpture Trail in 2018 and 2019.

2018 Mike ran Still Solos for SPILL 2018 and will be running listening walks at Snape Maltings during the Aldeburgh Festival and then throughout the summer, and in 2019, SoundHide Cinema.

paper-works*

16th December 2019 By Nicky Stainton

paper-works* is an artist led printmaking studio in a generous edwardian seaside house in Lowestoft just a few minutes walk to the beach on the suffolk coast. Our aim is to facilitate and encourage the exploration of works on paper, from printmaking to drawing, photography and the written word. All with an emphasis on analogue, eco-friendly, low tech and sustainable techniques.

We provide studio access through our membership scheme and also run a regular Tuesday evening printmaking workshop and a programme of day courses.

Nicky Stainton

Nicky Stainton

I explore two themes through my paintings and drawings – the shapes and colours of the landscape around the Waveney Valley, often captured in winter when the bones of the landscape are more evident. And a more complex theme that addresses displacement, dispossession and loss. With these I incorporate fragments of old maps as a base for charcoal drawing and then encase them in encaustic wax. The half-hidden tracks and contour lines speak of places remembered and left behind, borders, barriers, the past and a network of life-lines etched onto the faces of these dispossessed people. I hope to create a connection between viewer and viewed, to stimulate a conversation, or at least internal reflection, about those who have been uprooted. I have been an active member of Harleston & Waveney Art Trail (HWAT) Collective since 2014.

I was Chair of W&BA for 9 years, until the 2019 AGM.

Seagull Theatre

8th June 2018 By Nicky Stainton

Seagull Theatre

The Seagull Theatre Community Interest Company is a small theatre in Pakefield, Lowestoft, which plays host to a regular stream of local talent, regional and national touring theatre companies. We are home to many resident companies including our own touring Theatre company; The Seagull Rep.

The building, which used to be a school, was converted into an arts centre in the 1960’s and was run by the Suffolk County Council until 2006, when the funding was withdrawn. A local resident stepped in to buy the building from the council and turn it into a Community Interest Company as “The Seagull”. With the help of volunteers the theatre reopened at the end of February 2009 and has re-established itself as an important performing arts venue, offering a diverse range of shows, classes and workshops. In addition to our Auditorium, we have three studios upstairs that provide space for local groups to rehearse or functions to be held.

The Seagull is run by volunteers, with two permanent staff members. Please contact us anytime and our dedicated team of volunteers will endeavour to assist you with any queries and ideas that you may have. The Seagull is a community venue working with and for you to ensure this vital resource continues to thrive and contribute quality programming, facilities and opportunities to the area.
