An event of two halves, starting with a stroll around Walberswick to learn about architect Frank Jennings and his Arts & Craft style houses in this pretty village. Then, in the Flint Barn, Dr Roger Simpson will give an illustrated presentation on the life and paintings of John Constable, explaining the historic context of his life and how it influenced his work. Accessible to wheelchairs but narrow streets with no pavements for part of the walk.

Concert by Suffolk’s Seraphim set to celebrate 
unsung achievements of mothers & more.

For centuries, society kept mum about the work and creative achievements of inspiring people, simply because they weren’t men. Now, in the centenary year of the enfranchisement of millions of women, Suffolk’s highly acclaimed, all-female vocal group, Seraphim, will sing out in their honour.

The concert featuring a specially devised programme of words and music by, about and for, unique and talented women, past and present is to take place at St Peter’s Church, Westleton at 5 pm on Sunday 18th March – just a week after Mother’s Day itself.

“Virginia Woolf observed that women were anonymous for most of history,” shares Seraphim’s director, Vetta Wise, who has hand-picked the works to be performed from eminent composers throughout the world. “It is a gift that we have the opportunity to share the wonderful works composed or arranged by women, from medieval nuns to modern day independent voices, and it is an honour to give them the due acknowledgement and presence they deserve.”

“So many of these women played important roles in families, religious orders or their own social circles, but ownership of their talent was seemingly denied and suppressed.  It is truly surprising how so many absolutely amazing works have been ‘dumbed down’ or got ‘lost’ under the radar over the centuries merely because their creators were not permitted a real voice in society.“

The Seraphim concert will include works by Fanny Mendelssohn, who in her lifetime and beyond, went by the name of Fanny Hensel, so that her impressive compositions did not overshadow those of her husband. ‘Hidden’ French writer – also in her centenary year – Lili Boulanger, is to be featured alongside Emily Bronte, plus exciting living composers like Carlotta Ferrari, Ana Fernandez and Suffolk composer, Bridget Cousins.

As well as the unique a cappella sound of Seraphim’s nine incredible voices, the celebration will include accompaniment and solo performances by renowned local pianist, Karen Smith.

Becker Exhibition – Opening & Mike Holtom Award

You’re invited…
to the Opening Bash (Private – not very- View if you prefer posh) of the INSPIRED BY BECKER EXHIBITION 2017. 
Not only will we refresh you with some bubbles or softer soda style bevs, and delight you with over 100 hung works to drink in, but the Mike Holtom Award for abstracting the landscape, new this year, will be announced/awarded for the very first time. 
The photo shows Mike on our Twitter page banner, beside one of his paintings, with a glimpse of another underneath. 
 
Mike, abstract painter based in Southwold, was a lovely man, and worked hard on the committee to help run the show these last 5 years. Sadly he died earlier this year, so the society, together with Mike’s family, decided to introduce this award to celebrate his work and the man himself. Some of Mike’s work will be part of the show. 
 
Please turn up at St Peter’s Church, (of Mediaeval Doom fame), Wenhaston, IP19 9EG, between 6 and 8pm on THURSDAY AUGUST 3RD.

Genevieve Rudd

Genevieve Rudd has led and organised community arts projects since 2011. She has developed projects with people in care homes, museums, galleries, libraries, youth clubs, schools, community festivals and in outdoor public spaces. In particular, Genevieve’s projects consider heritage, cultural and environmental themes. They encourage closer looking, enquiry through making and ask about the places and people around us.

Informed by her training in art photography, in Genevieve’s own arts practice, she uses multidisciplinary techniques including hand-sewing and cyanotype, an early photography technique. Her inspiration is drawn from the natural world through exploring botanical forms, working directly with plants, or utilising recycled and natural materials. Within this, she considers themes of time, place and seasonality.

Within Our Midst – Lowestoft’s Hidden Art History

This linear town walk reveals the overlooked street art that Lowestoft visitors and residents take for granted. It delves into lost artistic businesses, such as East Anglia’s only porcelain factory and the still thriving artists’ brush factory. We’ll learn more about the town’s theatrical heritage and visit artist Mark Burrell’s studio to view his dreamlike paintings of the town’s now lost beach village. Meet at: Suffolk Records Office, upstairs in Lowestoft Central Library, Clapham Road South, Lowestoft NR32 1DR Short town walk.

Allow 3-4 hours duration when paying for car parks.

Arts & Eats – Disscover Diss Delights

Come along for a sociable light lunch and discover what the new look Diss Corn Hall arts and heritage centre has to offer following its refurbishment as part of the town’s £3.2 million Heritage Triangle project.

David Case, the trustee leading the heritage project, will provide the background to the project Jess Johnston, arts & heritage outreach manager, will cover the history of the building and the Heritage Triangle and explain what heritage research facilities and events will be on offer. And director Angela Sykes will outline the daytime additions to the programme and some upcoming highlights. They will also lead groups around the building so you get to see all those hidden areas.

And let’s not forget the lunch! Fredrick’s Fine Food has taken over the catering franchise and will be providing Coq au Vin (made with chicken breast, mushrooms, button onions and bacon) served with a Ciabatta Roll, Butternut Squash and Chickpea Tagine or Pea & Mint Soup served with a Sourdough Roll, followed by Walnut & Chocolate Brownie or Carrot & Pineapple Cake.  Special dietary needs catered for.
